Creating an Attitude of Legacy

The idea of legacy evokes a whole range of emotions and thoughts. It is an opportunity to take stock of one’s possessions and accomplishments, as well as the people, work, ideas, and commitments that have given one’s life meaning. It is also an opportunity to make plans for the future, both personal and professional.

In South Sudan, where drought and famine are devastating the lives of two-thirds of the population, Samaritan’s Purse is responding with food distributions and community assistance projects. As you can imagine, Easter celebrations in the 17 field offices around the world vary greatly—but the reason for celebrating is universal.

The shelter serves a diverse group of adults and is a model for other shelters in the area. It is staffed by volunteer Christian women from the community. Embracing Diversity

Embracing diversity means actively seeking out people who differ from you in various ways. This can be as simple as looking past customs and speech, or it could mean embracing people of different beliefs and traditions in your life. Having a diverse community helps you understand what it’s like to live in other parts of the world, and it allows you to see things from new perspectives. It’s also a great way to combat racism and other forms of discrimination, which can be found in all corners of the world.

Diversity is important in a corporate setting as well, since it can benefit a company in many ways. It improves morale, and it increases productivity by bringing in perspectives from a variety of backgrounds. In addition, research shows that companies with greater diversity outperform and outlast those that are more homogenous. Embracing diversity is good for business, and it’s a great way to show your support of social responsibility and sustainability initiatives.

For example, a company that prioritizes diversity can help employees feel more empowered and valued by showing them that it’s okay to be unique in the workplace. This can lead to more creativity and improved decision making. Embracing diversity also benefits your company’s reputation in the marketplace, and it can attract potential employees who are interested in working for a compassionate, inclusive, and progressive corporation.

Another way to embrace diversity is to work to reduce your own unconscious bias. This can be a challenge, but it’s one of the best ways to create a more open and welcoming environment for everyone in your organization. It’s important to have a learning mindset, and you may never become completely free of your own biases. However, if you continue to try and overcome them over time, you’ll be better prepared to embrace diversity for years to come.

One of the most effective ways to make progress with diversity is to start at the top level. It’s important to have executives that value the importance of a diverse workforce, and they should encourage other members of the company to do the same. This will set an example for the rest of the company, and it will help them achieve long-term success.
Embracing Spirituality

The resurgence of spirituality is visible everywhere. In art museums, late artists who dove deep into mysticism and religion are garnering posthumous attention. Museum visitors are flocking to see Hilma af Klint's dazzling 2018-19 show at the Guggenheim or to Agnes Pelton's mystical paintings that debuted at the Whitney in 2020. In our churches, we are embracing spirituality by facilitating home-based evangelistic Bible studies that teach key Old Testament and Gospel narratives in order to create a biblical worldview and prepare people to hear the gospel message of redemption.

Embracing spirituality also means allowing our communities to have a diversity of religious beliefs and traditions. Some people prefer to worship in a traditional church setting with a choir and orchestra. Others are drawn to more informal settings, such as a coffee house or a bandstand. Still others prefer to worship on their own, either in the privacy of their homes or by tuning into a sermon broadcast over FM radio. We embrace spirituality by providing multiple ways to connect with God and one another, including through music, meditation, prayer, and the celebration of holy communion.

Many people need hope for the future. In this time of global turmoil, famine, drought, and political conflict, Samaritan's Purse is there to bring relief and hope to the people of South Sudan. Whether it's through food distribution, livelihood projects, or medical care, we are there to help in any way that we can.

We are there to offer the healing touch of Jesus's love and a ray of hope for the future.

During the pandemic, Beacon of Hope Brethren Church in Louisville, Ohio, began to meet for outdoor, "parking lot" worship. When they returned to their sanctuary after the virus had passed, they celebrated their return with baptisms. They were a beacon of hope, leading their community by example. Now that they have returned to indoor worship, they continue to be a beacon of hope, serving as an example for their neighbors of how to serve Christ by serving their fellow believers in all their diversity.
Embracing Community

As a non-profit, ABOH is dependent upon a wide variety of community partners. These partnerships provide a unique opportunity to serve those in need and share the hope of Christ with those who may have forgotten it. These partnerships also provide the means for ABOH to develop and strengthen its financial base, in order to accomplish our mission and vision.

A key component of a team member’s job is to build and maintain these relationships. To this end, each employee must be willing to attend ABOH team building and staff meetings as scheduled and report directly to the governing Board of Trustees. ABOH employees must be committed Christians who demonstrate and prioritize a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. In addition, they must affirm and support ABOH’s commitment to care, statement of faith, and the sanctity of human life. They must also agree with and personally support ABOH’s policies and procedures.

Embracing our changing community also involves creating an environment that is inclusive and welcoming of all people regardless of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic divides, gender, sexual orientation, ability/disability or religion. This is accomplished by fostering respectful dialogue and actively working to eliminate any discriminatory behavior in the workplace and in our community at large.

Another way to embrace community is by offering a place where those in need can receive care and love. One example of this is Beacon of Hope House, a transition home for women parolees. This loving home is supported by a pastor from Kailua United Methodist Church, who believes that a house of transition will make it easier for these women to begin a new life when they leave prison.

Other examples of embracing community include serving food to the homeless in a local shelter and volunteering to help build homes for families in need. Still others are helping to provide physical and spiritual aid to those suffering in South Sudan, where drought, famine, and political turmoil are contributing to the displacement of two-thirds of the population.
